Art, then, is perhaps “something presented for our aesthetic contemplation” – a phrase coined by John Davies, former tutor at the School of Art Education, Birmingham, in 1971 – though ‘something’ could seem too inclusive. Gaining our aesthetic interest is a minimum of a needed requirement of art. Sufficiency for something to be artwork requires significance to art appreciators which endures as long as tokens or kinds of the art work persist. Paradoxically, such significance is sometimes attributed to objects neither intended as art, nor especially intended to be perceived aesthetically – as an example, votive, devotional, commemorative or utilitarian artefacts. Furthermore, aesthetic interests can be eclipsed by doubtful funding practices and social kudos.
In one respect, the insouciance of pop artwork came as a refreshing breeze. Warhol’s soup cans and Oldenburg’s large floppy hamburgers made no momentous claims to have banished nostalgia, legend, and fable; although partly they were intended to disclose the hollowness of capitalist business culture, they could not assist however provide subject material that was attractive, reassuring, and familiar. These have been the nonetheless lifes of prosperous postwar America, and, like their 19th-century counterparts with their glistening fruit and greens, they spoke of abundance. Not until then did I properly grasp the insufferable depth of German artists such as Ernst Kirchner, Otto Dix, and George Grosz, who created their most memorable work during the war or simply afterward.
